It’s the call that no one ever thinks they’re going to get, “You have cancer.” A wide range of emotions run through you as you prepare to fight the cancer battle next to the one you love. As much as you wish you could switch places with them and help them fight, you can’t, but there are other ways you can be there to support patients and survivors.
While your wife, mother, sister, niece, or best friend is definitely a fighter, there are times she just won’t have the energy to battle at the hospital, through doctors appointments, with nurses not paying attention, or anyone else. One of the best things you can do for her is become her advocate: ask the hard questions, pay attention to the small details she may not catch, get the nurses attention, and always act in her best interest.
While your partner is battling cancer, you can help to organize and keep track of the various things that go along with that. This means keeping track of doctors appointments, medications and pills, various hospital bills, and even test results. Help keep track of this type of stuff so she doesn’t have to.
Keep it “Normal”
Even though your loved one has cancer, it doesn’t mean you need to change every little thing about your life. If there are small things you like doing together, like a weekend movie night with homemade popcorn, keep doing that. Try and incorporate your favorite things into your everyday routine so that it doesn’t seem like cancer is taking over completely.
You don’t have to stay positive every second of the day, trust us, that’ll get hard, but when your partner is feeling especially down, do your best to boost her back up. Doing small things around the house or just reminding her how great she’s doing are still words of encouragement. Just keep reminding her that she can do this.
